Genesis 29:8


And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and [till] they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

Geneva  Bible - But they said, We may not, until all the flocks be brought together, and till men
roll the stone from the well’s mouth, that we may water the sheep.

Genesis 29:7


And he said, Lo, [it is] yet high day [early in the day], neither [is it] time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go [and] feed [them. ]

Geneva Bible - Then he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be
gathered together. Water ye the sheep and go feed them.

Genesis 29:6


And he said unto them, [Is] he well? And they said, [He is] well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.

Geneva Bible - Again he said unto them, (d) Is he in good health? And they answered, He is in
good health, and behold, his daughter Rachel cometh with the sheep.
(d) Or, is he in peace? by the which word the Hebrews signify all prosperity.

Genesis 29:5


And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know [him. ]

Geneva Bible - Then he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? Who said, We
know him.

Genesis 29:4


And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence [be] ye? And they said, Of Haran [are] we.

Geneva Bible - And Jacob said unto them, My (c) brethren, whence be ye? And they answered,
We are of Haran.
(c) It seemeth that in those days the custom was to call even strangers, brethren.


Genesis 29:3


And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.

Geneva Bible - And Jacob said unto them, My (c) brethren, whence be ye? And they answered,
We are of Haran.
(c) It seemeth that in those days the custom was to call even strangers, brethren.

Genesis 29:2


And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there [were] three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone [was] upon the well's mouth.

Geneva Bible - And as he looked about, behold there was a well in the field, (b) and lo, three
flocks of sheep lay thereby (for at that well were the flocks watered) and there
was a great stone upon the well’s mouth.
(b) Thus he was directed by the only providence of God, who brought him also to Laban's house.

Genesis 29:1


Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

Geneva Bible - Then Jacob (a) lifted up his feet and came into the (*) East country.
(a) That is, he went forth on his journey.
(*) Hebrew: to the land of the children of the East.

Genesis 28:22


And this stone, which I have set [for] a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give [a tithe] the tenth unto thee.

Geneva Bible - And this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, shall be God’s house, and of all
that thou shalt give me, will I give the tenth unto thee.

Genesis 28:21


So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:

Genesis 28:20


And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,


Then Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If (h) God will be with me, and will keep me
in this journey which I go, and will give me bread to eat, and clothes to put on;
(h) He bindeth not God under this condition, but acknowledgeth his infirmity, and promiseth to be
thankful.


Genesis 28:19


And he called the name of that place Bethel [lit, House of God]: but the name of that city [was called] Luz at the first.

Geneva Bible - And he called ye name of that place (*) Bethel; notwithstanding the name of
the city was at the first called Luz.
(*) Or, house of God.










Genesis 28:18


And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put [for] [lit, at his head] his pillows, and set it up [for] a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

Geneva Bible - Then Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had laid
under his head, and (g) set it up as (*) a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
(g) To be a remembrance only of the vision shewed unto him.
(*) Genesis 31:13 .

Genesis 28:17


And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful [awesome] [is] this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this [is] the gate of heaven.

Geneva Bible - And he was (f) afraid, and said, How fearful is this place! This is none other
but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
(f) He was touched with a godly fear and reverence.

Genesis 28:16


And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew [it] not.

Geneva Bible - Then Jacob awoke out of his sleep, and said, Surely the LORD is in this
place, and I was not aware.

Genesis 28:15


And, behold, I [am] with thee, and will keep thee in all [places] whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done [that] which I have spoken to thee of.

Geneva Bible - And lo, I am with thee, and will keep thee whithersoever thou goest, and will
bring thee again into this land; for I will not forsake thee until I have performed
that which I have promised thee.

Genesis 28:14


And thy seed [descendants] shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed [descendants] shall all the families of the earth be  blessed. Genesis 28:13


And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I [am] the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed [descendants];

Geneva Bible - (*) And behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of
Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land, upon the which thou
sleepest, (e) will I give thee and thy seed.

Genesis 28:12


And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and  behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

Geneva Bible - Then he dreamed, and behold, there stood a (d) ladder upon the earth, and the
top of it reached up to heaven; and lo, the Angels of God went up and down by
it.
(d) Christ is the ladder whereby God and man are joined together, and by whom the Angels minister
unto us; all graces by him are given unto us, and we by him ascend into heaven.

Genesis 28:11


And he lighted [came to] upon a certain place, and tarried [stayed] there all night, because the sun was set; and he took [one] of the stones of that place, and [put] them for his pillows [lit, put it at his head], and lay down in that place to sleep.

Geneva Bible - And he came unto a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun
was down, and took of the stones of the place, and laid under his head and slept
in the same place.
